Desert Beauty, Star Trails, and Light Painting

Day 1:

We will explore the ruins of Wonderland Ranch and discover the beauty of the desert. After the sun goes down, there will be opportunities for light painting and star trails. Learn about the equipment and techniques needed to make creative star trails and night sky photographs. Star trails require long exposures, a sturdy tripod, lockable remote release.

The Main Attractions

Day 2:

We will explore the heart of Joshua Tree and be guided to prime locations such as Arch Rock, Skull Rock, and Juniper Rock. Learn about the equipment and techniques needed to make creative night sky photographs. You will learn how to capture the Milky Way and stars with optimal camera settings. Come learn how to make these captivating images!

Details including meeting times and location will will be provided a week prior.

Materials Needed

  • Camera
  • Wide-angle lens
  • Multiple backup batteries, backup memory
  • Wired locking remote release with a backup wired release. DO NOT depend on the camera’s internal intervalometer.
  • Tripod
  • Remote Shutter Release
  • Warm protective clothing for hiking
  • Water and snacks

Instructor

Scott Crawford (Graphic Artist/ Photowalks) has been working in Los Angeles as a graphic artist for over 20 years. His style most often features bold, striking colors that evoke a sense of lively realism. He’s inspired by the outdoors, architecture and other creative people. Landscape photography, in particular, offers endless creative challenges that have taught him to see the world in new and interesting ways. By traveling and meeting other like-minded artists, he enjoys the challenge of searching for fresh subjects and ideas.
